2I think that the negative stigmas surrounding mental health problems are the main reason why people choose to suffer in silence rather than seek the help that they need. People can be made to feel ashamed of depression due to lack of knowledge, understanding and belief in common misconceptions and I’m glad that’s finally changing.

1. “Depression means that you’re sad all the time”

Sadness is a symptom of depression, not depression itself. Sadness comes and goes, where as depression causes a range of unpleasant emotions that can make every day life very difficult to live. However, it’s a myth that people with depression never feel happy or have fun. 2a07248b61ba36b186e75cb9ad3a1e08

2. “People with depression don’t go out”

Of course, depression can make it much harder to enjoy socializing, but people who suffer from depression don’t just lie in bed and watch Netflix all day. At the end of the day, you have to be resilient and get on with every day life, no matter how challenging it may be at times.

3. “Depression is caused my traumatic events”

It’s very likely that past traumatic events can trigger or lead to mental health issues in later life, but this is not the only cause. When it comes to mental health, depression doesn’t discriminate and it can affect anyone at any time.

4. “Antidepressants are the magic solution”

There is no “cure” for depression, it’s not only a mental disorder, but also a biological and psychological condition. However, depending on the situation, doctors may prescribe antidepressants, but this is usually accompanied by therapy or counselling. On top of that, anyone suffering with mental health issues need lots of love and support from their friends and family.

5. “Depression is all in your head”

As well as emotional side effects, depression can cause physical symptoms, such as, insomnia, headaches, joint and muscle pains and changes in appetite which can cause the person to gain or loose weight. However, everyone is different and symptoms vary from person to person, so you never know how depression is going to effect you.

Silicone Sponge VS. Beauty Blender

Hi everyone and welcome back to my blog! Once again, I’m a little late to this craze. When I spotted a two pack of silicone sponges in Primark for just £2, I was slightly hesitant, but thought I may as well test it out and I wanted to share my experience with you guys!

There are defiantly pros and cons on both sides, so I can see why people may love or hate it. It doesn’t have the almost immediate blended look of a beauty blender and I think this may put people off using it initially, but eventually it does blend out. There is also a different technique to it that, for me, would take some getting used too. As you can imagine, the silicone sponge is super easy to clean! The foundation that I was using literally glides straight off it which means that it probably wouldn’t need to be replaced as regularly as a beauty blender.

The best feature of the silicone sponge is that it doesn’t soak up any of the make-up that you’re using. I was really surprised at how little product I actually needed compared to how much I would normally use. I would definitely recommend the silicone sponge if you’re using an expensive or designer foundation because it would make it last at least twice as long! However, I would say that the silicone sponge is more of a money saver than a beauty blender. Although, the sponge itself is much cheaper compared to a two pack of Real Techniques beauty blenders (£9.99), overall it looked more caked on than blended which was surprising because I used much less make-up. Also, without the pointed tip and flat edge it was really difficult to cover my blemishes and apply foundation on the hard to reach creases of my face, like around my nose and eyes.

In theory, the silicone sponge is a great idea, but in practice I think it needs to go back to the drawing board for some perfecting before I’d be prepared to throw out my beauty blenders!

8 Things Not to Say to Someone with Anxiety #MHAW2017

b32bb0df4d0958f5bb3e33c2ca419515As its Mental Health Awareness Week, I wanted to write a post to raise awareness on the stigma surrounding Anxiety. 1/4 people will be affected by mental illness at some point in their life, so if you are not experiencing it yourself then it’s more than likely that you will know someone who is.  Therefore, I believe it’s important to speak openly about mental health not only for those who are suffering, but to also give their friends and family a better understanding of mental illness.

“You’re pathetic”

Anxiety can make the most simple everyday tasks seem almost impossible. Always be mindful because you never know what’s going on inside someone else’s head that could be making them struggle with something that you find really easy.

“Get over it”jkjjjkkj

If only it were that easy! The same as any physical health problem, anxiety is not something that you can control, you wouldn’t tell someone with a broken leg to just get over it and get out of bed! There are lots of organisations that offer help and support to people living with mental illness, which can make it more manageable, but not just put a stop to it all together.

“You’re not even trying”

On the outside, it may look like someone is not trying very hard to help themselves, but anxiety is a constant battle, which can make it difficult to do all kinds of things, like socialize and maintain strong relationships or even just to get out of bed in the morning.

“People have it worse than you”

Being privileged doesn’t prevent mental illness or deny anyone the right to feel sad sometimes. Everyone has their dark days and I think it’s unkind to belittle someone’s emotions and make them feel insignificant.

p“Stop apologising”

It’s a common trait for people suffering with anxiety to find comfort in being over apologetic and polite. It’s important not to get frustrated by this and do your best to reassure them that everything is okay.

“What do you have to feel stressed/anxious about?”

This confrontational attitude is not kind or helpful. You never know what’s going on in someone else’s life, physically or mentally, so I think it’s important to respect people’s personal issues and this goes for everyone!

“What you’re doing isn’t helping, you should try…”

This is a tricky one because depending on the situation, trying to help someone by giving them advice could be really helpful. However, in some cases, what the person is stuck doing isn’t necessarily what they would ideally like to be doing. Anxiety can build barricades between a person and their hobbies and social life. In which case, it’s important not to force them into doing anything they don’t feel comfortable with.

“I know how you feel”

Unless you have a personal experience of an anxiety disorder/s, then I don’t believe you can understand how someone who is suffering from anxiety is feeling. Everyone experiences stressful situations throughout their lives and this can lead to an anxiety disorder developing, but feeling anxious or stressed before an exam or interview is not the same as having an anxiety disorder.

NYX Lip Lingerie – Over or Underrated?

Hi everyone and welcome back to my blog! I was a little late in first trying out the NYX 800897848330_liplingerie_pushup_alt1Lip Lingerie product, but at just £7, I decided to test it out in the shade “Push-Up”. I immediately fell in love with the pink nude colour with a slight brown undertone. I usually combine this product with a Mac Lip Pencil in shade “Boldly bare” which has similar red/brown tones and matches perfectly!

The consistency of the product is really smooth and easy to apply and I love the completely matte finish that doesn’t crack. My only criticism would be that the product becomes really dry a few moments after application and I usually feel the need to apply a small amount of clear lip balm or Vaseline on top to prevent my lips from feeling dehydrated. However, this product is the most long lasting lipstick that I’ve ever used and it stays perfectly intact all day/night. In addition to this, NYX’s range of gorgeous nude shades and the matte finish is perfect for me.

Overall, I think that NYX Lip Lingerie is a great product, but I think the formula still needs perfecting, so it feels more weightless than dry. I’m not sure if I would recommend it, but at such an affordable price, I think it’s worth testing it out for yourself. I love matte nude lipsticks, so this is definitely one of my go-to lip products at the moment!

How to Face up to Your Acne

Hi everyone and welcome back to my blog! I think one thing that we can all agree on is… growing up with acne sucks! At the grand age of 18 years old, my skin has finally started to clear up its act and I wanted to share some of the products I use, my daily skin care routine and most importantly, some top tips on how to deal with acne.

I understand that blemishes can make you feel really self-conscious and want to cover them up, but wearing little or no makeup can really help to improve your skin! Top tip: if I’m wearing makeup during the day, I will always make sure that I wash it off as soon as I get home, rather than waiting until I go to bed.

For the best full coverage results, you need to find yourself a fab primer to create a smooth base to build your foundation on. My go to primer is the Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser which gives your skin that lightweight, airbrushed feeling. I’m defiantly a drugstore makeup girl, but when it comes to my skin, I think it’s only some of the pricier products that provide long-lasting and full coverage. I avoid using MAC products or any brands that animal test as much as possible, but when it comes to getting that flawless finish, I’ve found that the Pro Longwear Foundation set with the Studio Fix Powder provides an amazing full coverage that will last all day!

I carry out my skin care routine twice a day, when I wake up and when I go to bed. I start by using the Clean & Clear Deep Cleansing Lotion which removes everyday build ups of dirt etc. from your pores. It’s such a refreshing product to use first thing in the morning, really wakes you up! Next, I use a Tea Tree Exfoliating Scrub and finally, I use the Sanctuary Spa Moisture Spray, which is an amazingly light, hydrating spray. Occasionally, I will apply Bio-Oil onto my acne scars and leave it to absorb overnight which can really improve their appearance long-term. However, I would not recommend this product to anyone that suffers from oily skin.

The most important thing to remember is that you are not alone, 80% of people aged 11 to 30 are affected by acne. You are far more aware of your imperfections than other people ever would be. I mean… how often do you find yourself noticing other people’s flaws? Never, because you are far too concerned with your own! There are lots of things that you can do, besides using skin care products, to improve your complexion, like drinking lots of water and eating lots of fruit and vegetables. If you have tried everything and nothing is working for you, then don’t stress it! Acne won’t last forever and you should never ever let it get in the way of your confidence.

Why Zara Is Winning the High Street This Spring

untitledWelcome to my first blog post! My favourite season of the year is upon us and I was on the hunt for a light weight spring jacket. After purchasing my winter coat from Zara last year, I thought this would be a good place to start looking and it wasn’t long before I came across this gorgeous sky blue jacket.

I love this jacket because the fitted sleeves and lapels look smart and sophisticated, but the biker zips and belt give the jacket a bit of edge. The suede effect material is light and comfortable which makes this jacket a perfect spring item and the pale baby blue colour softens the overall look of the jacket.

I also love this jacket because it can be dressed up with a shirt or dress for a more formal look or dressed down with jeans and t-shirt for a more casual outfit.
